The Society for Creative Anachronism, The Barony of Ruantallan and Canton of Seashire are proud to put forth a display of marshal combat for your enjoyment. Sit back as combatants engage in one of two marshal activities, Heavy Fighting (Full Force Full Contact Un-Choreographed Combat) or Fencing with live steel (Think 3 musketeers, where anything from a dagger to a cane can be used to assist you in dispatching your opponent). Listen to the crash of shields and the clanging of blades and transport yourself back to an earlier period in history.

Cthulhu Lives!
Very few authors have had the honour of having genre or subgenre named after them, but Lovecraftian horror is now known worldwide.  H.P. Lovecraft spent most of his life in poverty and near obscurity. But his themes of cosmic alien indifference to humanity struck a chord with many other authors who penned their own stories in this genre.

In this panel we will discuss stories by Lovecraft and others such as Robert Block (author of Psycho), August Derleth, Caitlin R. Kiernan and others. Many Graphic Novels, film, and games are based on Lovecraftian horror and these will also be discussed.

Dorks in Dungeons
Back by popular demand, Dorks in Dungeons will return to Hal-Con this year for 7 years in a row - bringing three scheduled shows to the incredible performance lineup.

Game Masters will lead PCs in a fantastical journey through Continentia through the eyes of the Special Parcel Service, a troop of crooks, criminals, and misguided dwarfs, sentenced to delivering the mail for an embarrassingly lengthy amount of time. Using only their wits and the ever fickle D20 roll, they must face grave danger, traverse unknown lands, and survive their own incompetence.

Using the framework of a tabletop Role-Playing Game, Dorks in Dungeons use long-form improvisation to create memorable and hilarious player characters, and adventure on with challenges brought to them by a pit of improv actors. Audience members have the power to change the fate of the journey by their suggestions and the coveted Reroll Token.

Will our heroes be up to the challenges they face on stage? Will they reroll their fate for better or worse? Will they be able to eat enough poutine to get them through their journey? Join Dorks in Dungeons at Hal-Con this year to find out!

Superheroes, Gods, Monsters, Villains: Religion and Comics Culture
Some superheroes have god-like powers. Some comics narratives hinge on ideas of good and evil. Comics culture around the world is rife with stories about god-like beings, new worlds being created, and apocalyptic doom just around the corner. This panel will explore some of the ways that comics borrow from, teach, or even challenge religious ideas and themes. We will also talk about how ideas in the academic study of religion can help us to understand comics culture as a kind of religion. The panellists are faculty members in Saint Mary’s University’s Department of Religious Studies who teach and research comics.

Everybody's Doing It: Talking About Sex and Disability (Recommended Audience: 16+)
It's a persistent myth that good sex should be spontaneous and should involve (at least!) one party member hanging upside down with their legs wrapped around their ears. At Venus Envy we know that everyone and anyone can have hot sex, regardless of abilities, shapes, sizes, colours, gender, orientation, etc. In this workshop we will outline ways in which folks who experience pain, or altered mobility and/or sensation, can spice up their sex life using toys and position accessories.

Presented by Rachele Manett (she/they)

PLEASE NOTE: This panel includes the frank, open discussion of topics related to sex and sexuality and may not be appropriate for everyone. It is recommended for attendees aged 16+.

--

Venus Envy Halifax is an education based sex shop and bookstore located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Since opening in 1998 Venus Envy has strived to be a safe space to explore desires and expand knowledge on topics surrounding sexual health and social justice.

They strongly believe that one of the best ways to enjoy a healthy and playful sex life is to be informed. To that end, they offer workshops on all kinds of sex and social justice related topics where people can ask questions and share their experiences in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Hal-Con Highlights 2015: Lost Girl Q&A
When Lost Girl costars and friends Kris Holden-Reid and Paul Amos took the stage in 2015, no one could have predicted the utter side-splitting insanity that took hold.  Far too funny for words, and featuring the question "How many tic tacs can someone fit in their mouth at once?" this Q&A stands out as a highlight for years to come.

Spoiler: we were finding tic tacs for the rest of the weekend around mainstage.
